1.5 GENERAL Type CEUs
A practical, system-level Tier 2 intervention that helps BCBAs® move from firefighting crises to leading proactive change in schools.
By Robyn Powley, M.Ed., BCBA
Tired of Putting Out Fires Instead of Preventing Them?
As a school-based BCBA®, you know the struggle:
✔ A student is slipping between Tier 1 and Tier 3… and you don’t have time for another full FBA.
✔ Teachers are frustrated. Parents are confused.
✔ You’re spending more time managing crises than building prevention.
Too often, Check-In/Check-Out (CICO) gets reduced to “just a point sheet.” Without strong implementation, fidelity, and data, it collapses into another abandoned system.
This course helps you turn CICO into a scalable, high-impact intervention that works across classrooms and staff.
You’ll learn how to:
✔ Spot students who are perfect candidates for CICO before escalation happens.
✔ Implement with fidelity, even in schools with high staff turnover.
✔ Use data to guide decisions and refine supports.
✔ Align interventions with function—so they stick.
✔ Lead systems change with confidence.
Why I Created This Training
"I didn’t create this training to teach another point system—I built it because I watched too many students escalate who could’ve succeeded with the right Tier 2 support. CICO, when done well, is one of the simplest, most effective tools we have. My goal is to help BCBAs® take it seriously as a system—not dismiss it as a sticker chart."
Robyn Powley, BCBA® and special educator, has over 30 years of experience supporting students with emotional and behavioral needs. She’s trained countless school teams to use CICO not as a throwaway, but as a real intervention that prevents escalation and improves outcomes.
This isn’t another “overview.” You’ll walk away with tools you can use the very next day:
Stop wasting time on mismatched interventions and prevent Tier 3 escalation.
Train and coach staff to maintain consistency—even with turnover and competing demands.
Know when to fade, adapt, or intensify supports with confidence.
Solve breakdowns like lost staff buy-in, plateauing students, and data gaps.

This course is designed for:
✔ BCBAs® working in K–12 schools
✔ Clinicians balancing system-level and student-level responsibilities
✔ Professionals tired of chasing Tier 3 solutions when Tier 2 could’ve prevented escalation
“What if I’ve already used CICO before?”
Then this course will help you strengthen it—fixing fidelity gaps, staff buy-in, and data use.
“Can I share this with my school team?”
Yes. Materials are designed for BCBAs® to use in coaching and training others.
Excellent presentation on a topic, Trauma Informed Behavior Supports, that requires much more attention in an educational setting. Several examples were presented to further one's understanding.
Rosemarie B.
This is important information for all BCBAs®. We never know what someone has experienced, and having the tools of not only seeing behavior objectively, but through a lens of potential trauma is so important
Shelby H.
As a BCBA® recently transitioning from a clinical to a public school setting, this course helped build my understanding and tool box to better support students through a trauma-informed lens in a less restrictive setting.

You’re called when the fire’s already burning. This post shows how to stand up Check-In/Check-Out (CICO) fast—without bypassing referrals—so teachers get relief, students get wins, and you get clean data to guide next steps.
What you’ll get from the post (and can use this week):
✔ The CICO blueprint (Tier 2, done right): AM check-in (1–2 min) → DPR with 2–5 Tier-1-aligned goals scored 0–2 across ≥4 periods/day → PM check-out with same-day reinforcement → brief home sign-off.
✔ Referral-aligned rollout in 5 steps: build a small team → standardize goals & print the DPR rubric → train fast with praise/neutral scoring scripts → collect 3–5 days baseline → launch and review biweekly.
✔ One-page data dashboard: track (a) daily % overall, (b) by period “hot spots,” (c) 5–10 day moving average, (d) attendance/tardy flags, (e) fidelity (ratings completed? same-day reinforcement?).
Simple decision rules you can standardize:
✔ Continue ≥80% moving average
✔ Modify 60–79% or class dips (tighten rubric, boost reinforcement, adjust intervals)
✔ Intensify <60% with fidelity (shorter intervals, prompts, verify function)
✔ Fade ≥80% for 2–3 weeks (thin ratings & reinforcement; return recognition to Tier 1)
Reinforcement that actually works: front-load Weeks 1–2 with student-choice menus; set initial criterion from baseline; then thin to Tier-1 levels as data stabilize.
✔ Fit check (save everyone time): best for mild–moderate, multi-setting concerns where adult attention helps; not for severe safety, attention-averse profiles, or escape-maintained issues unless you function-modify CICO.
✔ Fast fixes for common pitfalls: no data → build the 1-pager; inconsistent scoring → print the 0–2 rubric on every DPR + practice; overloaded teachers → ≤3 CICO students/teacher; flat data → check function, upgrade reinforcers, shorten intervals, verify fidelity.
On the fence about the course? Read the post, pilot CICO with one student for 10 school days, and watch the dashboard trend up. When you’re ready to scale, the CEU training hands you grade-band DPRs, reinforcement menus, fidelity tools, and troubleshooting for non-responders.
