What Is Cultural Humility in Supervision?

Cultural humility isn’t a box to check. It’s not about mastering the nuances of every culture, memorizing customs, or using the “right” words to avoid offending someone. It’s about shifting your mindset—from being the expert in the room to being a curious, compassionate collaborator. In supervision, that means:

Being open to learning (always)
Even as the supervisor, you are still learning. Cultural humility invites you to stay curious—to ask rather than assume, to seek understanding over control, and to listen even when you think you already know.

Fairness doesn’t mean treating everyone the same. It means meeting people where they are.

Adapting your feedback to fit someone else’s worldview

Supervision isn’t just about getting RBTs® to implement what you know—it’s about helping them connect with it in a way that works for them. When you adapt your communication style, feedback, and teaching methods to reflect an RBT’s® background, values, and experiences, you unlock real engagement.

Think of it as the difference between telling someone what to do and inviting them into a shared understanding.

Recognizing that your way isn’t the only way

Many of us were trained in systems that rewarded consistency and compliance. But cultural humility asks us to pause and reflect:

Is this approach working for this person, right now?

Cultural norms, communication styles, and interpretations of behavior vary—and we can’t expect one-size-fits-all supervision to meet diverse needs.

What feels “neutral” or “best practice” to you might feel foreign, even invalidating, to someone else.

Meeting RBTs® where they are—not expecting them to meet you

Cultural humility means honoring the full person in front of you—not just their role on your team. It’s asking:

How do they learn best?

What motivates them?

What does respect look like to them?

When you prioritize relationship over rigid structure, supervision becomes a place where growth happens naturally.

Why This is Critical for BCBAs®

  • Burnout among BCBAs® is on the rise—especially when supervision feels like an uphill battle.

  • Studies show that cultural humility reduces burnout and improves RBT® engagement.

  • Without it, feedback gets ignored, interventions fall flat, and families feel unheard.

  • The BACB ethics code requires cultural responsiveness in supervision.

This course equips you with proven tools to overcome these challenges, ensuring that your training is effective and sustainable.
